The Boarding Day
| 7.00am-7.30am | Get up! |
| 7.30am | Breakfast – supervised by boarding staff, then return to rooms. |
| 8.15am | Tidy personal space and get ready for the day. |
| 8.40am | Registration in House. Any notices for the day ahead are relayed here. Pupils are now in school for the day and generally will not return to boarding unless there is a pressing need. |
| 8.50am-9.10am | Chapel every weekday except Wednesdays when all pupils have House meetings |
| 9.10am-4.00pm | School day begins (on a Saturday the school day runs from 9.00am-12.00pm) |
| 4.00pm-5.00pm | Activities – Boarders can sign up to 5 activities per week |
| 5.00pm- 6.15pm | Relaxation time. This time can be used for making a snack, changing, unwinding in the common room, taking a shower after sport, instrumental or singing practice in the music rooms, watching TV or using the computers. This is also a good time for family members to phone pupils. |
| 6.15pm– 8.00pm | Prep time –Junior years are supervised in the Library; Intermediate years have space in their rooms in which to work; Sixth Formers are able to take advantage of the Sixth Form Centre, which is supervised by a member of the senior management team each evening until 9.30pm. |
| 8.00pm-9.30pm | Relaxation time in the houses. Making toast, watching TV, reading, playing pool or table football and enjoying each other’s company. |
| 9.30pm-10.45pm | Bedtime depending on age group. Lights out and sleep. Tomorrow is another busy day! |
Weekends
Boarders thoroughly enjoy their weekends with their friends, taking part in activities, making use of the school’s outstanding facilities, heading out from school on trips or just spending free time together. Boarders have access to all the school facilities at weekends including the ICT rooms, sports hall, squash and tennis courts, all-weather pitch, music school, swimming pool (supervised) and our magnificent and extensive playing fields and grounds.
With the emphasis on fun together, boarders get involved in many in-house events such as team building, quizzes and movie nights, which take place mainly at weekends. Boarders are allowed off site at appropriate times to walk into Barnard Castle town centre. On Saturdays, boarders will often be involved in sports fixtures after school finishes. Twice a term there are trips to the MetroCentre at Gateshead, Newcastle, York or Leeds, and there are opportunities to see Newcastle Falcons, Durham County Cricket or Manchester United play.
A wide range of Sunday trips are organised to theme parks, adventure attractions and activities like go-karting, paint-balling, bowling, trampolining, ice-skating and the cinema, in addition to Duke of Edinburgh Award and CCF activities. Sundays also provide time for performance rehearsals and opportunities for informal games. Prep is kept to just 45 minutes on Sundays.
Barney is unique in staying open over Exeat weekends. Boarding house staff are present to look after boarders who cannot get home and to run trips over the Exeat weekend.
