Speech from Headmaster David Cresswell during the King’s Coronation Medal ceremony
25 Nov 2024The role of Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) within the Combined Cadet Force is vital to its success. CFAVs act as mentors, leaders and role models for cadets, guiding them through a wide range of challenging and rewarding activities designed to develop confidence, leadership, teamwork and resilience. They deliver training across diverse disciplines, including fieldcraft, navigation, marksmanship, first aid, rules of flight, aircraft recognition and adventurous training activities, while also instilling the core values of discipline, respect and community service. They often go above and beyond their official duties, dedicating personal time to prepare for events such as parades, flying days, residential weekends, field exercises and annual camps. They play a key role in fostering an environment where cadets feel supported, inspired and empowered to achieve their potential. By sharing their skills, experience, and enthusiasm, CFAVs help shape cadets into responsible and capable individuals who contribute positively to the wider society.
The King Charles III Coronation Medal was created to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla on 6 May 2023. To qualify for this honour, nominees must have completed five full calendar years of service between 2018 and 2023 and for CFAVs receiving the medal, it is a well-deserved acknowledgement of their hard work, selflessness, and the difference they make on a daily basis outside of the classroom. It is a meaningful way to celebrate their commitment and the lasting influence they have on the cadets. I am proud to announce that four Barney staff members have met this criteria, so could Lieutenant Colonel Connor, Captain Fairwood, Captain Briscoe-Smith, and Flight Lieutenant Beaty, please come forward to receive your medals.
