Barney Results in Focus – Kathyrne Steel
15 Aug 2024Music-loving A-level student Kathryne Steel plans to head straight back into her old classroom this September.
Kathryne, who studied Music, History and English Language secured a role as the new Music Technician in the schools Music Department prior to receiving her results.
She also has a place at the University of York to read Music and Sound Recording for after she finishes her gap year.
“I suppose I just can’t bring myself to leave,” she joked. “I joined Barnard Castle School in Year 7 and it’s been such an exceptionally enjoyable time. The teachers really make this school a special place. They’re so supportive and want the very best for you.
“Like every other A-Level student, I was nervous about the results this week as I’m so keen to make all my teachers proud of me. Some of that pressure was lifted with me knowing what I’ll be doing immediately, but I’m delighted to get the grades I want to be able to continue my music education.”
Kathryne’s love of music and music production has manifested itself in her learning a range of instruments, including guitar and piano, but admits her long-term abilities with the viola has made way for a new passion on drums.
While she lives in Barnard Castle town itself, her assistance in the music department will also be supplemented by taking up a residential role at the school.
Tony Jackson said: “It is wonderful to be welcoming Kathryne back to school on the staff side. She’s exceptionally talented, and brings with that a huge thirst for learning and understanding the craft of music production.
“Her passion for music, along with all the other ways she’s led with various student groups really is the embodiment of a ‘Barney’ student. We are thrilled she’ll be back in September as part of the staff, but when she does eventually decide to leave the school, she will do so with our very best wishes and a firm belief that she will go far in life.”
Aside from her passion for music, Kathryne has also played a significant lead in the 140-year-old school launching its first ever Pride Club, launched during Pride Week earlier this summer, as well as a world beliefs and religions assembly, held during the school’s ‘Feel Good Friday’ periods.
