Many congratulations, Charlie!
06 Dec 2023We are delighted for one of our Upper Sixth students who is celebrating after securing a coveted scholarship to the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
Charlie H has been awarded an Army Officer Sixth Form scholarship that includes a confirmed place to train as an Army Officer at the respected institution following his studies.
Charlie, a colour sergeant in Barney’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF), successfully completed multiple stages of assessment as well as completing interviews, essays, command tasks, psychometric tests, planning exercises and a variety of fitness tests and group tasks.
Each year, there are only around 100 people awarded such prestigious scholarships across the UK, making this achievement all the more impressive.
Charlie plans to study History and Politics at the University of Edinburgh when he leaves School at the end of this academic year. In addition to a guaranteed place for Army Officer Training, the scholarship also provides financial support for the completion of his A Level and university studies.
Commenting on his success, Charlie said: “To be awarded this scholarship is a great honour and I am really excited about the prospect of a career in the Armed Forces.
“I have been involved with the CCF for many years, over which time I have learnt many important skills from the enriching activities and residentials that are provided to the contingent on a regular basis. These experiences and the attributes that I have gained will stand me in good stead as I prepare for Sandhurst, after I have completed my studies, and I am grateful for this amazing, lifechanging opportunity.”
Barney’s CCF has gone from strength to strength in recent times, with the School boasting several Master and Lord Lieutenant Cadets among its current student body and recent leavers. However, Charlie is the first cadet from the School to be awarded a prestigious Army Officer Sixth Form scholarship.
Lieutenant Colonel Caroline Connor, Contingent Commander, added: “The CCF offers cadets a chance to engage in a tremendously wide variety of activities, to learn new skills, to explore and expand their mental and physical horizons and be part of something truly exceptional. Charlie is the epitome of this and I am delighted for him.
“He consistently surpasses the cadet values and standards and possesses natural leadership skills. To be awarded a scholarship of this significance, given the fierce competition for places, is a testament to Charlie’s character and is fully deserved.”
We are grateful to BFBS Radio for their recent visit, who interviewed Charlie about his achievement. You can listen to the full interview here:
