GCSE Results Day 2023

24 Aug 2023

We are incredibly proud of all students receiving their GCSE results today and, as our soon-to-be latest cohort of incoming Sixth Formers, we wish them a smooth transition as they emerge as leaders of our School in our thriving Sixth Form Centre from September.

87% of Barnardians achieved grades between 9-4, well above the national average of 68.2%.

Just under a third of candidates (29%) attained grades of 9-7, which are also higher than the 2023 national average of 22% and significantly greater than the 17.6% average in the North East.

Among the School’s outstanding performers were:

  • Charles Appleyard, who achieved 11 GCSEs between grades 9-7, which included six 9s
  • Ciara Johnson, Rhys Jenkins and Lucy Nattrass, who all achieved 11 GCSEs between grades 9-6

Barney’s outgoing Year 11s and their families enjoyed a special lunch event on the afternoon of GCSE Results Day, which was organised by the School.

Tony Jackson, Headmaster of Barnard Castle School, said: “I am enormously proud of all Barnardians who received their GCSE results today. The academic success achieved by students throughout their GCSE courses, combined with the vital soft skills they learn while at Barney, will help prepare them for the future.

“We look forward to welcoming our latest cohort of Lower Sixth students in September, where a wide range of exciting academic and co-curricular opportunities await them at Barney Sixth Form. I wish them all a smooth transition as they develop into leaders of our School.”

Mr Jackson added: “Those students who are departing Barney leave with all our best wishes, and we hope to see them at future events as members of our Old Barnardian community.”
