Headmaster’s Welcome

Parvis imbutis tentabis grandia tutus – once you have mastered small things, you can safely attempt great things.

Ours is a motto steeped in history, yet one that is more relevant today than ever before. It is the cornerstone of a School founded in 1883, yet one that is forward-looking and innovative.

Put simply, Barnard Castle School (or Barney, as we are affectionately known) offers a highly nurturing community where girls and boys are encouraged to push the boundaries of their abilities; safe in the knowledge they will be supported in success and in failure.

The lessons we learn from winning and losing shape our strength and resilience. The experiences gifted by participation in the classroom, on the stage, in the orchestra or choir, on the sports field and in service to others broadens our boundaries and deepens the character. It creates a platform for Barnardians to go out into the world as upstanding, engaging and level-headed people.

In our latest independent Parent Survey (July 2024), our parents spotlighted character education and a caring, supportive community as two of the greatest strengths of the school. The breadth of our co-curricular offering is also a magnet for families looking for a well-rounded experience and an environment to thrive. Value for money featured highly in our parents’ feedback.

As we enter a new era for Barney, our focus on our students’ minds is to the fore – both in terms of academic aspiration and in pastoral strength and wellbeing. Our most recent investment in a new Health and Wellbeing Centre at the heart of our school is testament to this focus.

Barney is one of the most affordable, high-value, co-educational boarding and day schools in the United Kingdom.

We remain affordable because we operate as lean an institution as we can, without compromising on the quality of the education we provide our pupils.

There is no better way to experience School than to visit our beautiful setting, nestled in the magnificent rolling hills of Teesdale in the historic market town of Barnard Castle.

I look forward to meeting you in the near future.

With warmest wishes,

David Cresswell
