Sam Carling MP Returns to Barney

Barnard Castle School’s Academic Scholars had the unique opportunity to engage in thought-provoking conversation over lunch with Old Barnardian Sam Carling MP (Tees ’20), who returned to the school for an inspiring discussion. Seated in the heart of the dining hall, Mr. Carling shared insights into his journey from student to Member of Parliament, while scholars posed a broad range of questions spanning politics, academia, and the Cambridge experience.

With many of our scholars aspiring to top universities, the discussion naturally turned to the Cambridge University application process, including the challenge of interviews, personal statements, and admissions tests. Mr. Carling, who studied Natural Sciences, reflected on his own experiences preparing for A Levels in Science and Maths, offering valuable advice on subject choices and how to approach university-level study.

The conversation also explored the rigorous and rewarding nature of Cambridge’s supervision system, where small-group teaching provides an unparalleled depth of learning. Scholars were particularly interested to hear how supervisions mirror the style of seminars offered through Academic Enrichment, where students are encouraged to engage in critical discussion, challenge ideas, and think independently. Those keen on Medicine and the Natural Sciences found Mr. Carling’s insights especially valuable in understanding the intellectual demands and opportunities of Cambridge undergraduate life.

With our scholars heading on a residential trip to Cambridge next month, the discussion provided an invaluable first-hand perspective, sparking even more excitement about experiencing one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Mr. Carling’s visit was a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain inspiration from someone who once sat in their shoes and has gone on to make a significant impact beyond school.
