Preppies inspired to pursue careers in medicine
19 Feb 2025
A LIFESAVING course has been inspiring mini medics to pursue careers as doctors.
Year 6 pupils spent the day with Andrew, an instructor from the First Aid Training Academy, practising a host of lifesaving skills as part of their Achievement Award.
The school’s Achievement Award is designed to be a less stressful, more diverse and enriching alternative to SATs.
Pupils were shown the ‘DR ABC’ approach to first aid. This stands for Danger, Response, Airways, Breathing and CPR and can be used on anyone who collapses or is injured.
They also learned how to call for help, including dialling 999, 112 and 111, how to use a defibrillator, how to deal with choking, bleeds, dressings, asthma and shock.
Rory B, 11, whose parents are both doctors, was left inspired and now wants to pursue a career in medicine.
“I really enjoyed the session and learned a lot,” he said. “Using the resuscitation dolls was fun.
“We were taught how to use bandages, about the different types of wounds, including cut arteries and how to apply pressure. I love sport and would like to be a rugby doctor like my dad or an A&E consultant.”
Georgina J, 11, is also now considering a career in medicine. “The way the course was taught was very easy to understand especially the ‘DR ABC’. I enjoyed learning how to put people into the recovery position. I used to want to be a vet but I think it would be even better to save people rather than pets.
“I’d like to work in a hospital, possibly as a surgeon as I’m not squeamish, as I love to help people and don’t mind giving up my time for others.”
Headmistress Mrs Turner said: “The mini medics day is a vital component of the Prep School Achievement Award, which Year 6 pupils complete in their final year.
“As an enriching alternative to SATs, pupils gain life-saving skills that they will carry into adulthood. They also develop a greater awareness of the needs of others and confidence in their own abilities, thereby boosting self-reliance, self-esteem and team building skills.
“The Achievement Award is something unique to Prep School, which has been developed over the past decade. Unlike SATs, the initiative runs all year round giving pupils invaluable skills for the rest of their lives.”
