Pupil Well-Being Room opened to boost mental health

06 Jan 2025

A DEDICATED room has been created at a leading Prep School to boost the mental health of pupils and enhance their academic learning.

Barnard Castle Preparatory School has converted a building into a Well-Being room where children can foster their emotional, social and mental health both in their PSHCEE lessons and at play times.

Headmistress Laura Turner said: “The Well-Being Room can provide numerous benefits for children, offering a designated area where they can express their feelings, process emotions, and manage stress in a non-judgemental environment.

“This wonderful space can help children learn to recognise and regulate their emotions through techniques such as mindfulness, breathing exercises and meditation and provide them with tools and resources to cope with anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues.”

The Well-Being Room is also equipped to facilitate group activities and discussions, promoting social interaction, helping children develop crucial interpersonal skills.

By offering strategies and support for managing emotions and conflicts, it also encourages positive behaviour.

The room provides teachers with resources and strategies to support students’ emotional and mental health, increasing their confidence in addressing these issues.

Being a neutral space, it promotes a sense of belonging and acceptance for all pupils, regardless of their background or challenges.

Mrs Turner said: “When children feel emotionally stable and supported, they are more likely to focus, engage and succeed academically.

“By teaching coping skills and resources for navigating challenges, this space can help children build resilience and a positive mindset.

“This can significantly contribute to a nurturing and supportive school environment, positively impacting children’s overall development and helping them thrive both socially and academically.”
