A warm welcome from our new Headmaster

05 Sep 2024

Barnard Castle School’s new Headmaster, David Cresswell, today gave his first address to students and staff in our wonderful Chapel.

Mr Cresswell spoke movingly about the power of the School motto, Parvis imbutis tentabis grandia tutus, which translates as ‘Once you have mastered small things, you can safely attempt great things‘.

Mr Cresswell spoke of the importance of Safety and providing the foundation for students to master the small things; and, of his desire to create a ‘Speak Up’ culture.

He said: “This means creating a safe environment, where every one of you feels confident to put yourself out there, whether at school or online. A place where you feel you belong.

“This isn’t just my responsibility or that of the teachers; it’s yours too. Each of us contributes to the atmosphere of safety by supporting one another with kindness. It’s tough to speak up when you witness unkindness—whether it’s in real life or online—but it’s necessary. Building a “speak up” culture means we don’t stand by; we act, we support, we encourage.

“There will be difficult moments, and that’s okay—life is challenging. These little moments help build resilience. I remember times when I felt safe to fail (and put myself out there) and I’ve been able to be the best version of myself. And, I remember other times when I haven’t felt safe.”

Mr Cresswell spoke touchingly about his young daughter, Olivia, who had butterflies ahead of her first day in the Barney Prep School; and, how he had his own butterflies standing in Chapel ahead of his maiden address as the new Headmaster.

He added: “The single most important thing to me is that each of you has the opportunity to thrive. There is nothing we cannot overcome together.”

Barney’s next Open Morning is on Saturday, 5th October. Any parents with children at other schools who are considering Barney as the place for their child to thrive is most welcome to join us. Please visit: Open Events – Barnard Castle School.
