Barney Results in Focus – Dan Newell
15 Aug 2024This year’s Head Boy, Dan Newell, is on his way to the University in Liverpool to read History after achieving BBB and an A in his EPQ.
Dan Newell, outgoing sixth form head boy at Barnard Castle School, is considering a life in the legal profession, but confesses the decision-making process hasn’t always been an easy one, and thanks the staff at his school for their support. He will be able to complete a law conversion course after his undergraduate studies.
Dan said “The teachers here made me realise that having clarity on these matters doesn’t matter at this stage of my life.
“I’ve researched dozens of professions, but staff at the school have always been 100% supportive of anything I’ve discussed with them and told me it was fine to be unsure. They always relieved what can otherwise be stressful considerations and I’ll be forever thankful to them for that support.”
The keen cricketer, who as well as playing for the school team also plays for Darlington Cricket Club, said his work experience shadowing a High Court judge in Newcastle, has persuaded him that it is a future in law that he now wants to pursue.
However, the multi-talented teen is also keen to maintain his interest in performing arts, having latterly played lead roles in the school’s adaptation of Accidental Death Of An Anarchist, where he played a gruff, un-pc West Yorkshire chief inspector. He also playing no fewer than eight different roles in the school’s adaptation of Monty Python And The Holy Grail.
Of his time at Barnard Castle School, Dan said: “I’ll always remember Mr Jackson’s advice that ‘Barney’ is a school that will always offer the fullest support and find help for those who strive to push themselves in whatever they do.
“Since arriving at the school as a five year old, i’ve always pursued a lot of different interests and
Outgoing headmaster, Tony Jackson said: “Dan’s adventurous spirit and tenacious nature are traits that we’ll always try to harness and support at Barney to help young men and women like him direct their passions in the right manner.
“As head boy in sixth form, he’s been a first-class ambassador for the school and whether his future lies on the cricket field, on stage, or in the courts, Dan is an individual who will always strive to give everything he puts his mind to 100 percent. We’re very proud of his long tenure at Barney and wish him well for the future.”
