Barnard Castle School – A Level & BTEC Results Day 2024
15 Aug 2024Barney students are bound for destinations across the British Isles and around the world after a successful year of A Level and BTEC results.
A wide variety of university courses, degree apprenticeships and direct employment await this year’s cohorts who outperformed last year’s group overall.
Examples of the range of opportunities being undertaken by this year’s leavers include:
- Robert Vart, who plans to study a Construction Management degree apprenticeship after securing A*A*AA in his four A Levels. He has been offered a place studying Civil Engineering at Imperial College, London.
- Will Whitburn also achieved A*A*AA in his studies and is bound for University of Bath to study Natural Sciences with a year’s professional placement or study abroad.
- James Coyle, who achieved A*A*A and an A* in his EPQ, is bound for Durham University to study Ancient History.
- Georgina Robson amassed AAB and A* in her EPQ and is heading to the University of Edinburgh to study Spanish and Classics.
- Kathryne Steel has secured a Music Technician role in the music department at Barnard Castle School ahead of applying to read music after her gap year. She has been offered a place reading Music and Sound Recording at University of York.
- Isabelle Hawkins, this year’s Head Girl, plans to read veterinary medicine after studying her way to ABB.
- Dan Newell, Head Boy, has accepted a place to read History at his first-choice university, Liverpool, with BBB and an A in his EPQ.
A special mention goes to Pavlo Bogdanovich who left war-torn Ukraine to join the Barnard Castle School Sixth Form. His initial interview with the Headmaster, Tony Jackson, in 2021 was cut short when Russian missiles rained down on Kyiv and Pavlo was forced to flee for cover in a nearby air raid shelter.
Pavlo achieved A*ABC in his four A Levels and is aiming for a university place in Milan, Italy.
A number of students had their hearts set on vocational opportunities such as Harry Hart who joined Barney in Sixth Form with the aim of securing the qualifications needed to join the Merchant Navy. Harry secured a Merchant Navy cadetship with Clyde Marine Training and will study at Warsash Maritime Academy, part of Solent University in Southampton. Harry’s leadership qualities shone through quickly at school, resulting in him being chosen as the 1st XV rugby captain this year.
Barney’s close links to the farming community were celebrated with Grace Bell securing the BBC she required to gain her first-choice place at Newcastle University to study Agriculture with Farm Management.
The School organised a special lunch event for students and their families this afternoon as their Barney journeys officially drew to a close.
It was an emotional day for outgoing Headmaster, Tony Jackson, who has seen many of this A Level cohort begin their senior school journey in Year 7 when he started as Head.
He said: “I cannot begin to say how immensely proud I am of this incredible group of young women and men. Above all, they have the character and values to make their way in this world with confidence and humility.
“We often talk about preparing young people for the test of life, not a life of tests. These fine individuals have grasped the opportunities provided for them at this brilliant school and gone above and beyond what they will have expected to achieve. They should be proud of their achievements, as I am sure they have made their families and loved ones proud.”
Mr Jackson added: “As they move to the next chapter of their life, so do I. While I leave day to day life in Barney, I will follow their progress keenly as they make their mark on the world.”
