Teesside Science and Technology Challenge Day

18 Jun 2024

Last Friday, Barnardians in Years 8 and 9 celebrated a series of academic successes at the Teesside Science and Technology Challenge Day at Teesside University!

Students worked in small groups made up of Barnardians and pupils from other participating schools, completing a range of STEM-related challenges over the course of an enriching day.

These included an E-fit task, where the groups had to create computer images of some of the teachers who had simulated a crime, a robotics challenge that had students programming a Lego Mindstorm EV3 robot to navigate a course accurately, a medical diagnostics task where team members undertook the role of a doctor, diagnosing conditions and learning how to take observations from patients and, finally, a vehicle challenge that offered students the chance to design and construct a battery powered vehicle with the aim of being the fastest by considering power transmission, speed and torque.

Prizes were awarded at the end of the competition, with Barney coming away with several accolades, including Overall Winning Team of the Day, one challenge winner and three runners-up awards!

Many congratulations to all students involved, especially team members Matilda C and Charlotte R, who have been invited to take part in the Regional Final next year with organisers commenting how impressed there were with the girls and how well they collaborated together to complete the tasks.
