Barney’s aspiring entrepreneurs ‘brew up’ coffee shop venture

14 Jun 2024

In a unique blend of entrepreneurship and student initiative, two of Barney’s Lower Sixth have been busy brewing up a thriving enterprise for the benefit of the Barnard Castle School community.

Mattheos P and Luke L have revitalised The Barney Brew, a student-run coffee shop that serves a range of refreshments and snacks to parents, students and visitors alike.

Operating during home sporting fixtures, it also opens on occasional weekdays from 4pm-5pm, with the pair hoping to extend their offering to cater for other school events, ensuringthe shop remains a central hub of activity.

The Barney Brew is located between two playing fields, close to Longfield House, offering outdoor seating with a spectacular view of the playing fields, providing an ideal spot for spectators during matches to enjoy refreshments.

The enterprise is supported by fellow students alongside their academic responsibilities, while encouraging their entrepreneurial pursuits.

Mattheos said: “I am an aspiring entrepreneur. Last year, I launched chainbreakers.shop, an online custom merchandise company, but quickly realised that I needed more exposure to physical retail sales and a better product and market fit. Having identified an untapped market during fixtures at the School, I pitched the idea to the Management Team, who have been fully supportive and allowed me to follow my passion for entrepreneurialism. The opportunity with The Barney Brew is giving me plenty of insight into operating a retail business.”

He added: “The addition of Luke, a like-minded student and friend, has been a massive help. We enjoy bouncing ideas off each other, which has established our clear vision for The Barney Brew and how best we can serve the School community.”

Luke added: “This venture provides a valuable opportunity for me to gain practical skills and business experience, so I was delighted to come on board and develop new skills, which will stand me in good stead post-Barney.”
