Sport

Since Barnard Castle School opened in 1883, sport and physical exercise for pupils has played a central role in school life. Teams were formed and competitions established in those early years and that tradition continues today. Our facilities support students to reach the highest levels, with many competing for the school, the county, region and even country.

Our 50-acres of grounds comprises multiple fields and grass pitches for seasonal games and activities including rugby, football, cricket, rounders, cross country and athletics. Astro-turf pitches and courts for hockey, netball and tennis ensure year-round outdoor activity.

Our indoor sports and leisure facilities include:

  • Sports hall
  • Squash courts
  • Heated indoor swimming pool
  • Fitness suite
  • Dance studio
  • Cricket pavilion
  • Indoor rifle range
  • Weights room

Our facilities are of such a high standard that the school has been selected to host English Cricket Board county junior matches, Aviva Premiership rugby team Newcastle Falcons’ residential camps and the Paris Saint-Germain Football Academy, as well as hosting many school fixtures.

A strength and conditioning coach visits the school two days a week and professional coaches offering first class tuition, in addition to our own high calibre and highly qualified PE and games staff team. We are also able to access the services of a qualified sports therapist.
